A pause in our mid semester break recap to give you a quick update on this earthquake business.
We're still being hit quite often with aftershocks. Last night we were hit by a 5.2, and then two 5.4's. I was up watching a movie with a friend (i.e. fully awake this time!) and these were much worse then the baby aftershock's we've been getting. I know it caused a small amount of damage in Christchurch, but nothing too major.
The Uni is still closed, I haven't heard of any damage except for in the library- where over 500,000 books were dislodged, row after row of book shelves have fallen over. Oofda, that will not be fun to clean up. I might try to contact someone and see if they need help, surely my knowledge of the Library of Congress categorizing system can serve some purpose?
On the home front, my building hasn't been harmed. We've had someone come and check everything out and our flat has passed with flying colors! However, drinking water isn't safe, we've been told to conserve water as much as possible, and to start storing jugs of boiled water in case they shut out water off again.
I attempted to go grocery shopping my second day back. Well, that might have been a mistake, Countdown was chaos. People were everywhere trying to stock up on things. The aisles containing bottle water, and bread were both pretty much bare as people grabbed as much as they could. Checkout lines were at least a 15 minute wait, and you could tell that everyone was at the very top of their stress meters.
-Edit- Went back tonight with my flat mates and a friend. The bread aisle had exactly one loaf of bread on it, the bottled water they were in the process of restocking(i.e it was GONE earlier), fruit was starting to look grim, cereal was also a lost cause, pretty much every aisle had massive empty holes in the shelves where much sought after food once stood. On the plus side, I found ice cream!
However, everyone I know is handling things well. Life goes on, all of my Uni friends are enjoying their extra week off- mostly by being completely lazy, or getting completely wasted, depending on the person. Me? I'm taking the productive route, trying to remember statistic problems that I haven't looked at in 2 weeks, or start a essay that I no longer remember what the lectures were about. It's going well, well that is only if you count all the ways of procrastination I'm coming up with as being successful.
