Jurassic Park in Our Pajama's

8/31/2010
Today was our big travel day; we caught the nakedbus at 7:30 this morning and arrived at Frans Josef at 4:50 this afternoon. When I say bus, well, that might be a touch of an understatement as van would be much more accurate. There were only 6 of us at the start, and by the time we switched to a bigger "bus" at Greymouth (6 hours from the beginning of the trip) Katelyn and I were the only two left out of the original group.
It's all part of the adventure right?
I spent most of the trip dozing in and out of sleep, but I was still able to catch some of the magnificent views of the west coast.

Our lunch break was at Punakaiki, or the Pancake rocks. There was a short 20 minute walk to look out over the ocean and see the actual Pancake rocks, so we were able to munch on our PB&J's as we wandered down the path. Before we reached the ocean,  we had to go through a bit of ferny, rain forest that strongly resembles Jurassic Park. This made the two of feel pretty vulnerable towards dinosaur attacks as we were still clad in our pajamas. I would imagine it's pretty hard to out run a a T-Rex in flip flops.

They're called Pancakes rocks because they look like a stack of pancakes-just not quite as delicious looking

We finally arrived in Franz Josef, which is a tiny town where, literally, the only thing to do is the glacier hike. We're spending the night Chateau Franz; a busy little hostel  that offers a rather skimpy veggie soup for supper- which is quite enjoyable in the fact that it's free!
