Go skiing!
Kasey and I have been wanting to go skiing since we got here, but haven't had the chance since we've been so busy with other things. Well, with two extra weeks off we have plenty of time now!
We ended up going to Mt. Hutt which is about 2 hours away from Christchurch. We chose it because it is one of the bigger slopes that is semi-close to us, and it has a shuttle to it everyday. We got to Mt. Hutt about 9:30 in the morning, rented skis and such and were ready to go!
I admit, I'm a little rusty, the last couple times I went 'skiing' I actually snowboarded. It's been about 2 years since I've been able to ski-but it's just like riding a bike, right? Well, maybe with a few more crashes involved.. Never the less, it wasn't too long before my body remembered what it was doing-also, incredibly thankful for Kasey who had endless patience!
The morning was absolutely stunning. We were up above the clouds, the sun was shining, the ski was gorgeously blue, the snow was a little too icy, but it was still a great day to be out skiing.
However, this beautiful blue sky was never meant to last. Over lunch the clouds came in, at first this just meant that the upper runs were a little foggy. But the fog became white out conditions that grew to encompass the whole field. The snow was white, the sky was white, the surrounding area was white: We spent the entire afternoon skiing blindly, using every little shadow in the snow to guide us down the path and not over the edge, following fellow skiers and flags, when possible, back down to safety-then getting back on the chairlift and doing it all over again!
Just for comparison sake:
It eventually turned in to sleet, and then a bit of snow. The sleet was a little too nasty to be out skiing in so we called it a day.
